The University of California, Berkeley seeks a creative, collaborative, and user-oriented librarian with demonstrated leadership skills to further the Library’s involvement in teaching and learning initiatives, with a special emphasis on the opportunities associated with undergraduate education.
The UC Berkeley Library is an internationally renowned research and teaching facility at one of the nation's premier public universities. In a highly diverse and intellectually rich environment, Berkeley serves a campus community of 27,400 undergraduate students, 10,700 graduate students, and a faculty of 1,600. The Library comprises 20 campus libraries – including the Doe/Moffitt Libraries, the Bancroft Library, the C. V. Starr East Asian Library and subject specialty libraries. With a collection of more than 11 million volumes and a collections budget of over $15 million, the Library offers extensive collections in all formats and robust services to connect users with those collections and build their related research skills.
The Library’s Instruction Services Division is a team of seven librarians and professional staff who provide leadership for all issues related to the Library’s educational role such as student learning, online education, digital literacy, first-year and transfer student experience, reference and research services, curriculum planning, instructional assessment, instructor development, and the design of physical and virtual learning environments. The Division supports undergraduate course-integrated instruction, drop-in sessions, online tutorials, educational resources and guides, and individual consultations. Our instruction seeks to develop literacies and skills of lifelong, self-sufficient, and technology-proficient learners who understand how to access, critically evaluate, manage, and use information as well as create and publish their own works.
The Head of Instruction Services Division performs a leading role in continuously improving learning environments in order to provide transformational library services to students on the Berkeley campus. The position calls for an experienced supervisor and project manager who is familiar with user-centered design processes, effective pedagogical practices, and emerging trends in higher education; energized by collaborating with students, faculty and library staff across all disciplines; experienced in articulating, designing, and piloting new programs and services; knowledgeable about gathering and using quantitative and qualitative data to inform planning; and committed to building understanding and enthusiasm for the Library’s role in advancing the University’s teaching and research missions. A commitment to flexibility, experimentation, collaboration, assessment, and continuous improvement is critical.
The Head of Instruction Services Division works collaboratively with library colleagues across all disciplines to propose, develop, and sustain a variety of instructional services and programs integral to the user-centered mission of the Library. New initiatives this person will have the opportunity to help shape span areas such as assessment of student learning, use of instructional technologies, exploration of online learning strategies, creation and use of open educational resources, development of digital literacies, and library support of undergraduate and graduate curricula campus-wide. The Division head engages directly with students and faculty by consulting with instructors about assignment design and research projects, developing and teaching course-integrated sessions, leading tours and orientations, developing guides and web pages, and contributing to reference services for the humanities and social sciences.
The Head of the Instruction Services Division plays an active role in articulating and implementing the Library’s role in a wide range of campus initiatives. This person also serves as library liaison to several key academic support units such as the Center for Teaching & Learning, Graduate Student Instructor Teaching & Resource Center, Centers for Educational Partnerships, and the Undergraduate Research Apprenticeship Program.
The position reports to the Associate University Librarian for Educational Initiatives & User Services, and is a member of the library management team. The team works collaboratively to guide and coordinate the strategic directions, programs, services, collections, facilities, and policies associated with public service divisions of the UC Berkeley Library. As our organization continues to evolve, division heads play an important role by helping build strong links between and across disciplines, departments, and campus libraries. To be an effective manager, the Head will lead department-wide and library-wide discussions; aid in creating and communicating Library policies; manage personnel and financial matters; contribute to division-wide and library-wide priority setting and project management; encourage ongoing staff development; and foster an environment of collaboration, creative thinking, and continuous improvement.
UC Berkeley librarians are expected to participate in library-wide planning and governance, and work effectively in a shared decision-making environment. Advancement in the Librarian series is based in part on professional contributions beyond the primary assignment; the successful candidate will show evidence or promise of such contributions to the Library, campus, UC System, and profession.
