The UC Berkeley Library has contributed over 3 million digitized books to HathiTrust.

The Library comprises 25 campus libraries, with a collection of nearly 13 million circulating volumes, almost 1.5 million e-books, subscriptions to over 130,000 journals and periodicals, and about 200 million items in its special collections, including rare materials held by The Bancroft Library, the C. V. Starr East Asian Library, the Bioscience, Natural Resources & Public Health Library, the Music Library, and the Anthropology Library. The UC Berkeley Library actively partners with the other nine UC campuses and the systemwide California Digital Library. The Library manages the systemwide off-site Northern Regional Library Facility. The Library has a current operating budget of about $62 million with approximately 325 full-time employees and 600 student employees each year.

Responsibilities

Under the general supervision of the Executive Director of Development, the Assistant Director of Development will implement plans for growing the major gifts pipeline via donor and prospect visits. This fundraiser will strategically qualify, cultivate, solicit and steward major gift prospects and donors to increase gifts to support the Library’s priorities, including the renovation of the Moffitt Library into the Center for Connected Learning. The Assistant Director of Development will focus on managing a portfolio of at least 100 individuals and engage current donors, as well as newly identified prospects, with the capacity to give $25,000 or more. The Assistant Director of Development is expected to conduct 130-160 in person visits or substantive phone calls per year with an average of 12-15 visits a month resulting in 25-50 gifts solicited per year.

Driving major gifts pipeline:

  • Researches, analyzes and synthesizes information from various sources to determine relevant characteristics of major gifts prospects.
  • Maintains a dynamic prospect portfolio of high-level annual fund prospects and emerging major gift prospects, with the capacity to give $25,000 or more.
  • Identify, cultivate, solicit and steward leadership and major gift prospects and donors. Makes 130-160 in person visits or substantive phone calls per year with an average of 12-15 visits a month.
  • In collaboration with Prospect Development and Library colleagues, including the Associate Director, Annual Gifts, identify and prioritize prospects for outreach and suggest refinements to queries when needed.
  • Cycle 35-45 prospects in and out of the portfolio annually, qualifying them into or out of the pipeline and assessing their inclination.
  • Develops short and long range donor engagement strategies.
  • Partners with volunteers and Library staff as appropriate to strategies.
  • Support annual and long term fundraising goals.
  • Qualify prospects and solicit 25-50 gifts per year.
  • Ensures that predetermined fundraising goals are met.

Donor Stewardship:

  • Partners with Donor Relations Manager on stewardship strategies.
  • Interacts with donors in person, by phone and/or written communication.
  • Attends stewardship events and meetings as appropriate.
  • Inform collateral material development by engaging donors as profile subjects and tracking interactions with Library.
  • Assists with recruitment and engagement of volunteer leadership – Library Board and subcommittees.
  • Attend functions and meetings and serve on internal/external committees as a Library representative.

Required Qualifications

  • Working knowledge of fundraising, donor relations and public relations concepts, principles, techniques, procedures and practices.
  • Working knowledge of the campus, including its vision, mission, goals, objectives, achievements and infrastructure.
  • Ability to work within a campus/multi-pronged organizational structure.
  • Working knowledge of applicable laws, rules, regulations, policies, et cetera.
  • Good written, oral and interpersonal communication skills, including political acumen, to establish and maintain effective working relationships and with outside constituencies.
  • Good organizational, analytical and critical thinking skills.
  • Maintain confidentiality.
  • Ability to prioritize tasks, working toward shared common goals.
  • Availability to travel and to work evenings and/or weekends for events.
  • 2-5 years professional experience in direct fundraising or client facing role.
  • Bachelor’s degree in related area and/or equivalent experience/training

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in higher education.

Salary and Benefits

The annual salary range of the position is $69,000.00 - $105,200.00, commensurate with experience.
