Departmental Overview

The Doe-Moffitt Libraries are the primary libraries for humanities, social sciences, and undergraduate library services on the Berkeley campus. The Library Security Unit of Library Facilities provides security to the Doe-Moffitt complex and collections including Bancroft Library and the Magnes Collection of Jewish Art and Life and extends to the 24 Subject Specialty Libraries around the campus.

The position is responsible for guarding university property to protect people, prevent theft, violence, or infractions of rules. Security personnel enforce library and campus policies and California State laws applicable to libraries. In addition, security personnel provide directional/informational assistance to students, staff faculty, library users from the general public, and visitors, Assists with crowds and traffic at public events. The position coordinates Library security with UCPD as needed.


Periodically patrols the Doe Main & Annex, Gardner Main Stacks and the Moffitt library buildings; interior and perimeters, and carry the necessary equipment for patrolling. Account for all security equipment at the beginning and end of the shift. Be familiar with the general lay out of the buildings within the complex. Know the locations of alarmed facilities, alarmed doors and alarm panels, light switches and fire extinguishers and their operating procedures. Unlock building entry/exit doors at the beginning of Library hours and ensures that the buildings are cleared and locked up at closing time. Record building checks conducted on the Building Check Log and punch in checks at the designated punch clock locations within the building complex. Be alert for any safety and security hazards, building maintenance problem and report findings to Facilities & Security Office or to Campus Facilities Services after normal office hours. Serves as back up relief for the Bancroft Library day shift security desk monitor.

Maintain operational control and supervision of all the student security monitors, rovers working during the shift. Assign postings, rotate post and break period. Conduct post checks and keep security monitors abreast of current information, policy changes, etc. Assist the Head of Security in training new hired personnel. Promote appropriate behavior, responsibility and accountability among staff members. Enforce the Library Policy on Conduct, Rules of Conduct in Campus Buildings, and California laws applicable to libraries and other policies related to security. Implement the Library Security Operating Manual and the Building Emergency Plan and notify key personnel. Respond to incident/complaint reports or to any emergency situation, notify UCPD and superiors, take appropriate action, conduct investigation and complete the required security report forms. Report illegal, suspicious, criminal activity to UCPD, notify supervisor and complete security report. Review security reports from previous shift and pass-on for information that may be useful to his shift. Provide assistance to faculty, staff, patrons and the public in general. Provide access to custodians into alarmed facilities and restricted areas during scheduled custodial services

Maintain a chronological record of security-related activities, incident/complaint reports and messages and the action taken. Complete and submit required security reports in a professional and timely manner. Perform other duties as assigned by superiors.

Sunday - Thursday 11 PM-7:30 AM

Required Qualifications

  • Excellent inter-personal skills for dealing with subordinate staff, other Library employees, regular Library patrons as well as disruptive individuals attracted to the Library.
  • Must be committed to a high level of public service as well as to firm treatment of persons who threaten the safety of people and the orderly research environment of the Library.
  • Demonstrated effective management skills, experience in training and supervising personnel.
  • Demonstrated effective oral and written communication skills.
  • Must have proficient computer skills and experience in the operation and applications related to electronic security systems, particularly the Software House, C-cure 900 Alarm and CCTV - Installed Unit and Intrasa and dedicated camera platform.
  • Must have an excellent attendance record and the availability to work flexible hours.
  • Position is subject to background check.
  • Must be able to work Sunday to Thursday 11:00p.m. to 7:30am.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Security guard state license (BSIS)
  • Safety training certificate
  • Certification in First Aid, CPR and AED
  • Certificate of Training in C-cure Alarm and CCTV security system
  • Experience working security in an academic setting
