Job Information

Job Duties:

The University Library aims to inspire and connect scholars with people and information to create new knowledge and to develop ideas that change the world. With that comes an abundance of interesting and important stories to tell — stories about the staff, students and scholars who make surprising discoveries in our Library spaces, stories about how unique Library materials came to be and are currently being used, stories about how the Library advances innovation on our Berkeley campus. The Library Communications Office creates and shares this content. We are looking for a graphic design intern to join our team and help design communications materials, such as flyers, exhibit labels, invitations, event items, wayfinding signage, and maps. The graphic design intern will also assist our staff graphic designers with other tasks, such as exhibit preparation and signage installation. This job is ideal for a student looking to enter the fields of design or communications. We are looking to hire a student who is available to work summer 2018 (more weekly hours are likely available in the summer) and also plans to continue working with us for a minimum of eight hours per week during the school year.

Required Qualifications:

The graphic design intern must be proficient in Adobe InDesign. She/he must have working knowledge of Adobe Photoshop and Adobe Illustrator. She/he must have a basic understanding of graphic design principles of typography, color and space. Please submit an informal portfolio with several work samples.

Desired Qualifications:

Proficiency in the Adobe Suite. Experience with and/or interest in storytelling and communications. Intermediate understanding of photo and illustration selection as it relates to design work. Experience with and/or interest in custom illustration and animation work is a plus. Previous graphic design experience and a portfolio that highlights this work.
