Job Information

Job Duties: 
  • Staff circulation desk; use Millennium library system to check out library materials to patrons and check in materials when returned
  • Answer directional and basic questions from patrons in a professional manner, in person or over the phone
  • Sort and shelve library books accurately by the Library of Congress classification system
  • Shift library books when shelves become too crowded
  • Maintain tidiness of public space (eg. clean public terminals, public tables, might need to vacuum book shelves occasionally as needed)
  • Open/close the library if assigned
  • Fill in for another student employee on occasion if schedule permits.
  • In the Fall/Spring semesters, must be able to work at least one evening shift per week (M-TH 5-8pm) and at least one weekend shift per month (Sat.or Sun), in addition to day shifts. Once work schedule is set for the semester, the employee must be consistent in his/her commitment
  • Perform other library tasks as assigned.


Required Qualifications: 
  • Must be punctual, reliable and have excellent attendance
  • Accuracy in following detailed instructions consistently
  • Ability to push a heavy book truck loaded with books. Must be able to lift, shelve, and retrieve heavy books as needed
  • Good communication skills
  • Helpful attitude with emaphasis on excellent customer service to library visitors at all times
  • Committed to working three semesters (This is not just a summer job!)


Desired Qualifications: 
  • Previous experience working in a library or in a public service setting a plus
  • Available to work during winter and spring breaks, and/or summer sessions
  • Preference given to applicants who can start training during the summer session a few hours a week.


Special Notes: 
  • Occasionally, employee may be asked to fill at other branches in the Social Sciences Division according to staffing needs. 
  • Students may be assigned to a combination of day, evening, and weekend shifts.
  • Must be able to work at least three semesters before graduation
