Job Information

Job Duties: 


  • Open and close building. In evening and weekend shifts, responsible for clearing and securing building in absence of supervisor.
  • Cover Circulation Desk and staff area ATTENTIVELY.
  • Monitor building, enforce Library Code of Conduct.
  • Report facilities, safety, and security problems.
  • Daily light cleanup of public areas.


  • Check in/out library items after inspecting them carefully.
  • Perform renewals and assist patrons with holds.
  • Refer special circulation and billing questions to supervisor.
  • Record user statistics throughout shift. 
  • Limited Item Record editing in catalog.

Public Services

  • Answer general questions clearly.
  • Recognize reference questions, direct them to Reference staff.

Daily ​Stacks Maintenance

  • Sort and reshelve books and other media.
  • Shelfread, straighten, shift, and page (retrieve) materials.
  • Search for items.
  • Other tasks as assigned.
Required Qualifications: 
  • Punctuality, dependability, and regular communication with supervisor and coworkers.
  • Comfortable with interacting constantly and professionally with the public.
  • Public-service oriented. Able to attend to patrons and surroundings, and absolutely approachable and courteous at all times. 
  • Prepared to monitor 3-story building and to contact campus police and facilities staff directly.
  • Prepared to perform repetitive tasks often.
  • Prepared to work in dusty and occasionally cold conditions.
  • Utter attention to detail.
  • Effective oral and written communication.
  • Able to uphold circulation policies.
  • Able to work independently under guidelines and to refer problems when appropriate.
  • Able to lift up to 30 lbs., push/pull carts loaded with books, sit/stand on low stools, read fine print accurately.
  • Responsible for assigned hours throughout semester, including start of semester, RRR Week and Finals, either by working or securing a substitute well in advance
Desired Qualifications: 
  • Previous library, security, and/or customer service experience preferred.
  • Familiarity with OskiCat preferred.
  • Familiarity with Library of Congress Call Numbers preferred.
Special Notes: 
  • Hiring specifically for May Intersession, SUMMER, and August Intersession ("Summer 2019). Availability to work hours specified for Summer 2019 PLUS regular availability during academic year, including mornings, evenings, and weekends strongly preferred.

  • These positions begin May 2019. Minimum commitment of 3 semesters REQUIRED for those hoping to keep this position beyond August 2019; please do NOT apply if about to graduate or leave for a semester abroad, etc.
  • Will consider candidates with UC Berkeley Library work experience for a shorter-term commitment.
  • If offered a position, must proactively monitor and promptly complete all onboarding requirements, stay in touch, and be available for WEEKDAY DAYTIME training. Failure to follow up in a timely manner will result in withdrawal of offer.
  • Intersession (May, August, late December/January) and Spring Break availability preferred, in addition to Summer and regular academic year.
  • During regular academic year, seeking 12-19 (max) hours per week, and hours per shift varies.
