There are a number of options available for shipping items outside of the United States. Costs and service times vary widely based on the recipient country's postal system. For this reason it is difficult to estimate how long a letter or package will take to reach a certain destination. Typically, the Library sends international packages via the USPS. We have found that there are fewer issues or delays due to customs requirements.

Because the Mail Services staff must complete necessary export documents, please attach a note to the outgoing package with the following information:

Sample Federal Express International rates:

  1. When mailing more than 5 pages, fold your documents in half and place in a 6x9 envelope to save an average of $0.41. (NOTE: Do not use an envelope with a clasp; there is an extra USPS service fee.)
  2. Screen your mailing list for unnecessary names, duplicates, and incomplete addresses.
  3. Do not over-insure. The post office and UPS will pay only the actual value of an item, not the declared value.
  4. Use postcards for short messages or announcements. Sending a postcard costs $0.32; the letter rate is $0.45.

Federal Express includes $100 insurance liability on all domestic and international shipments. A $0.40 fee is charged on items insured for more than $100 or a fraction thereof. The maximum amount of insurance Federal Express provides is $25,000.

FedEx Ground, FedEx Express, and UPS do not have a scheduled delivery and pickup time. However, all the primary couriers typically deliver before noon.

All tracking of domestic and international items shipped via Federal Express or UPS is available through fedex.com or UPS.com, respectively. Mail Services will provide any tracking information upon request.
